Box beds are a Scottish oddity and are often found in cottages outside of the major metropolitan areas of Scotland. They consist of a wooden box big enough to hold a mattress, a roof, 4 sides and sliding panels. The term box in other countries is also sometimes used to describe a space saving bed that can fold up into a box.
The other main base option is a bedstead, which supports the mattress on flat slats or on more responsive sprung slats. Solid bases or slats are a good choice for memory foam or mixed foam/spring mattresses. If a bedstead comes with the option of an upholstered base unit, this will be far preferable under a pocket-sprung mattress and will offer similar comfort and support to a sprung-edge divan.
The obvious choice when choosing a bed would be to go for a standard Divan bed, which come in different sizes single, double, king size and queen size. These types of beds are standard and you know exactly what you are getting. The only variation would be the type of mattress that you would buy separate or that can often come with a new bed, which would dictate how comfortable your sleep would be. There is also a variety of headboards that can be added to standard beds that sometimes can give it a completely unique look that can match your room decor.
