Box beds are a Scottish oddity and are often found in cottages outside of the major metropolitan areas of Scotland. They consist of a wooden box big enough to hold a mattress, a roof, 4 sides and sliding panels. The term box in other countries is also sometimes used to describe a space saving bed that can fold up into a box.
Some beds are designed for partners with widely differing body weights or comfort needs. Zip-and-link beds comprise two mattresses of different firmness and can be separated into two single beds, if required. Zoned mattresses also provide various firmness levels, either on each side, or along the length corresponding to pressure points. The Sleep to Live range by Bensons for Beds offers in-store computer body profiling to indicate which bed is most suitable; for partners with different profiles, the mattress is made with a dual sleep zone.
Some refer to the headboard as being the frame to the bed's painting. In fact, it has gone further than that and has become the painting itself. The footboard contributes to an extent, and so does the quilt or bed covering. The bed frame, as stated above, is not seen. However, in general parlance, the bed is the whole item, and the head of the bed, footboard frame and bed coverings are simply components.
