A canopy bed has a ceiling built into its frame. You can hang curtains from this ceiling, and these curtains block out the noise and light that can be so distracting when you are trying to sleep. Canopy beds come in a variety of materials--both wood and metal frame--and in many styles. Most models start at full size beds and size up to kings.
Deeper mattresses will have more fillings, offer greater comfort and be more expensive. Hand-stitched sides, found mainly on handmade beds, extend the sleeping area to the edge. Not all mattresses need to be turned over, but all should be rotated regularly so that the head end becomes the foot end.
Some refer to the headboard as being the frame to the bed's painting. In fact, it has gone further than that and has become the painting itself. The footboard contributes to an extent, and so does the quilt or bed covering. The bed frame, as stated above, is not seen. However, in general parlance, the bed is the whole item, and the head of the bed, footboard frame and bed coverings are simply components.
