In curtain terms, swag refers to the manner in which curtains are pulled to the sides of windows, about midway in their length. A draw back tie is looped around the curtains and is attached to a hook on the window frame, thus securing the curtains with the tops joined and the bottoms hanging freely. When released, the curtains close completely.
Make note that a curtain can serve two purposes: It can be a decorative element in your home and it can serve the purpose to block out light. Maybe you have a room where you don't care about blocking out light, in this case the thickness of the curtain will not matter a lot. You can then focus on style or color instead. On the other hand, if the main function of your curtain will be to block sunlight (for example in your bedroom) then a thin and translucent curtain will not be of much use. In such cases you want a curtain made from thick material that won't let through a lot of light. This is also a concern if your house doesn't have blinds and the curtain will be your only way to darken a room during day time.
Curtains are available nowadays in a wide variety of fabrics. Lighter fabrics help keep the room light and airy and are preferred during hot weather while heavy draperies with lots of fabric are more suitable for colder weather. It is best to choose two kinds of curtains for the bedroom for both seasons of winter and summer and change them accordingly every year. Choosing transparent curtains makes the room look sleek and futuristic but they are not very functional as they cannot successfully keep out light and can be a hindrance during sleep.
